Who is the biggest Star Wars geek in politics?

August 2024 · 2 minute read

There’s nothing like a new Star Wars movie to bring the political world together.

Republicans, Democrats, establishment players and upstarts agree that “Episode VII: The Force Awakens” is a big deal. And they weren’t shy about sharing their excitement on social media, starting back in the fall.

Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas) hung a Yoda ornament on his Christmas tree:

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) and family turned out for the movie, costumes and all:

Even Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) got in on the story in mid-December:

This week, Ted Cruz found himself holding a lightsaber before New Hampshire voters:

Speaking of Cruz, his supporters spoofed the Episode VII trailer to promote his campaign:

Star Wars fans backing Marco Rubio did the same:

Former Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) took the 2016 crossover to a new level with this post:

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) found a stowaway starfighter in his pocket:

Sen. Cory Gardner’s (R-Colo.) son is equally into the franchise:

Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) took a moment to pose with Darth Vader on Capitol Hill:

Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) used Star Wars references to raise funds for his Senate race:

Rep. Robert Aderholt (R-Ala.) snapped a photo of Star Wars sleeping bags coming off the assembly line in his hometown:

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) called Star Wars his favorite movie of the year:

Independent Journal caught Ann Romney swinging a lightsaber:

Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) spoofed Episode VII with a mock trailer for “Wastebook,” a report about government spending:

The YouTube channel Auralnauts took classic scenes from Star Wars and replaced Darth Vader’s quotes with actual soundbites from Donald Trump:

Still, none of these hold a candle to the posts from Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.), who we’re confident calling Congress’s No. 1 Star Wars fan.

Not only has Kilmer held Star Wars-themed fundraisers, he actually screened Episode VII privately for donors in Washington, D.C. in December. And it’s not uncommon for him to talk Star Wars on Twitter.

Back in September, after reading about voters unknowingly being registered as Adarians, an alien species depicted in a Star Wars comic book, Kilmer tweeted this:

In October, he stopped for a photo with Darth Vader and two storm troopers on Capitol Hill:

Kilmer and family carved Star Wars-themed pumpkins:

And dressed up as Star Wars characters:

Finally, here’s a roundup of the fan gear from Kilmer’s office:
