Avalon WR Trevon Diggs resists Maryland connection and signs with Alabama

It won’t be long before Trevon Diggs is playing in front of packed stadiums, with cameras following his every move on the field. In some ways, he’s already used to being under the spotlight.

But for his National Signing Day ceremony, the Alabama commit kept it simple. Just family, a few classmates, Coach Tyree Spinner, and some Avalon administrators, sitting around a table at the small all-boys private school, which enrolls about 100 high school students and shares a building with the First Baptist Church in Gaithersburg.

Trevon Diggs never had trouble generating interest from colleges, as offers poured in beginning his freshman year. Whether he’d get to play for a powerhouse school was never in doubt; it was just a matter of which one.

On Wednesday, Trevon Diggs signed his National-Letter-of-Intent to play for the Crimson Tide. With his older brother, former Good Counsel All-Met and Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs, in attendance, the Avalon senior put to rest the possibility that he’d flip to Maryland and go against the oral commitment.

“It just felt perfect,” Trevon Diggs said. “It felt like a home away from home, to get comfortable there, be able to get situated.”

The ceremony was a stark contrast to his older brother’s four years ago. Stefon Diggs made waves when he became the highest-rated in-state recruit in years to commit to the Terrapins. But he didn’t sign until more than a week after National Signing Day, before a ceremony to announce his decision at a packed College Park bar.

Though Trevon Diggs is often compared to his brother, he made a name for himself during a well-chronicled high school career in Montgomery County. The two-time All-Met played his first two years at Wootton, under then-Coach Tyree Spinner, and followed Spinner to Avalon, a small independent school in Gaithersburg, for his junior and senior seasons.

The lack of exposure and limited roster depth during the past two falls did not inhibit Diggs’s recruiting. He often played with his friend, Bullis All-Met quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Jr., during offseason workouts and 7-on-7 events and was considered one of the top six wide receivers in the country this year by both ESPN and 247 Sports.

Diggs had 1,269 receiving yards this past fall, and back-to-back 1,000-yard campaigns, while playing on both sides of the ball. He doubles as a Division-I caliber cornerback. Like his brother, he has big play ability with the ball in his hands. Scouts raved about his footwork and vision in the open field.

Diggs orally committed to Alabama in November, citing his relationship with former Friendship Collegiate football Coach Aazar Abdul-Rahim, who was then working as an assistant director of player personnel at Alabama. When Abdul-Rahim got hired as the defensive backs coach at Maryland in December, Diggs briefly considered joining him in College Park.

“At first it was [tempting] but after the coaching switches and stuff, it kind of went downhill,” Trevon Diggs said. “Because it just wouldn’t have been a safe situation.”

Ultimately, the Crimson Tide’s championship pedigree and the recent development of former wide receivers Julio Jones and Amari Cooper into NFL stars, were too much for Diggs to pass up. This is the fourth-consecutive recruiting class, and the sixth time in seven years, that Alabama picked up a four- or five-star recruit from the Washington area.
