Opinion | Heres a way to ease traffic congestion on I-270

July 2024 · 1 minute read

The July 19 Metro article on Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) seeking bids for innovative congestion management of Interstate 270 did not mention the years of previous studies and plans ["Hogan — in Potomac, not Cleveland — taps money for I-270"]. While we are waiting to find something "new," how about a simple solution to help alleviate congestion: immediate construction of a third lane in both directions from Clarksburg to Frederick?

Tens of thousands of people are being added at Clarksburg and Urbana and thousands more in Frederick County and beyond, plus a new outlet center is scheduled to open this fall. All this development is occurring with no new roads. This is insanity. I-270 is the only major north-south route through Montgomery County to serve this up-county area and the pass-through traffic trying to reach other parts of the D.C. metro area and the East Coast.
